The Perkis-Zarankin husband and wife team complement each Salon concert with a four-hand piano performance, and Stuart Hamilton, renowned CBC Quizmaster and founder of Opera in Concert, returns to host all six events. This year we are extremely proud to be producing two salons in collaboration with Valery Gergiev, General and Artistic Director of the Kirov (Mariinsky) Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia and Honorary patron of Off Centre. First seen in Toronto in 1996, OA' s Giovanni has toured eight cities in Japan, Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, and, last November, Korea's prestigious Seoul Arts Centre as part of festivities celebrating 40 years of Canadian diplomatic relations with South Korea. "Creative imagination, brilliant acting and singing, and excellencies of direction," declared the Chosun Ilbo. It will be sung in Italian with English and French surtitles. Henry Purcell is England's most famous Baroque composer, and Dido and Aeneas is his only opera. Last presented in 1995 at the Houston Grand Opera, this Opera Atelier production toured Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, and England with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre). It will be sung in English with English and French surtitles and paired with Marc­ Antoine Charpentier's Acteon (last presented by OA in 1998). All performances are at the Elgin Theatre with a preperlormance chat one hour prior to the show. Orchestra Toronto celebrates its 50'h Anniversary Season as one of Canada's premier community volunteer orchestras, providing affordable family entertainment, music education and full repertoire in all its programs. The 2004-2005 season begins November 6 with an Anniversary gala in the George Weston Recital Hall. English composer/conductor John Rutter conducts the Orpheus Choir, Chorus Niagara and the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus in the Canadian premieres of two of his recent works: Mass of the Children and Feel the Spirit, with soloists Monica Whither, Alexander Dobson and Theresa Thomason. Other highlights: Vaughan Williams' The First Nowell, with narrators Barbara Budd and Barry MacGregor; Susa's Carols and Lullabies with guitarist Timothy Phelan; Distler's Dance of Death; Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle, featuring the return of former Sidgwick Scholars Michael Colvin and Karen Wierzba; and the premiere of a newly commissioned work by Derek Holman. Since then it bas quickly become a leading choir for young professionals in Toronto. This vocal ensemble is comprised of over thirty-live gifted singers, many of whom are beginning their professional music careers. The choir has traveled to Italy live times and choristers have had the remarkable opportunity to perform for audiences in cities including Assisi, Padova, Loreto, I: Aquila and Roma. Locally the choir has performed at the Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts, the MacMillan Theatre (University of Toronto) and the Markham Theatre, as well as various churches. The choir places a locus on Italian repertoire including sacred and operatic works and new choristers are accepted by audition only. Most recently the choir traveled to Italy in March 2004 where they performed in Roseto degli Abruzzi and Fermo, Le Marche. The choir has been under the direction of Sabatino Vacca since September 1999.
