Juno Who; Juno WhereONE

Juno Who; Juno WhereONE OF MY PERSONAL favourite Juno moments of allBarenaked Ladies vaulted onto the stage to pick up theiraward. It was one of those typical Juno ceremonies – more poppymoments than Remembrance Day and, like the Oscars, just enoughfashion runway moments to keep me watching while I grumbled andwaited for speeches I could sneer at).And then something very unexpected happened. One of theBNL’s leaned forward into the microphone, Juno hoisted high, andsaid that this moment was one they wanted to share with… wait forit… their public school music teacher, because that was where theyacquired the musical habit.Fast forward to February this year, and I found myself sittingin the Harbord Collegiate Institute auditorium in downtown Torontolistening to a “Sizzling Strings”school concert, all of it ok, most ofit way better than that. And with… wait for it again… one of thosesame Barenaked Ladies, bass player Jim Creeggan, sitting in. Notshowboating, just sitting in, sawing away at his standup bass. Justthere. Making the same point I heard (or thought I did) from thatVancouver Juno stage: hey kids, this is where it all starts – learningwhat it feels like to make live music together. So you won’t catch me grumbling about the Junos even thoughmuch of the music I would normally listen to with any kind ofserious intent will not make it into the televised evening’s spotlight;and even though the awards in the classical genre, the most in anycategory, will not make it onto my tv screen (and jazz, our otherobsession will get nearly as short shrift.)This year, you see, March 22, CARAS and Roy Thomson Hallhave had the brilliant idea of presenting OVATION, a Juno-relatedevent celebrating Canadian classical music.OPENERIt will be hosted by Peter Oundjian who is music director of theTSO (as you probably knew), and now also of the Scottish NationalOrchestra (as you probably didn’t). Congratulations Peter. The concert will feature no fewer than eight of this year’s Junonominees: Gryphon Trio, Amici Ensemble, Winona Zelenka, AntonKuerti, Lara St. John, Angèle Dubeau/La Pietà, Duo Concertante(performing an R. Murray Schafer work nominated for ClassicalComposition of the Year) and Measha Brueggergosman. Tafelmusikwhich, while not nominated this year has been nominated 37 timesin the past, is the icing on the cake. These and other nominees will also be in action throughoutthe month, all over The WholeNote map: cellist Winona Zelenka,March 11 at St. John’s United Church in Oakville; Amici in theirown concert at the Glenn Gould Studio April 3; and pianist JaninaFialkowska no fewer than three times: with the Hamilton Phil on the5th; solo in Newmarket on the 13th, and solo in Waterloo onthe 15th.On the jazz front, you can catch vocalist KellyLee Evans’ atThe Old Mill’s Dining Room on March 14, and fellow vocal jazzalbum nominee Laila Biali, at Hugh’s Room on March 25, while nofewer than three instrumental jazz nominees will be at the GladstoneHotel March 26 as part of JunoFest: Toronto’s Adrean Farrugia andMontreal’s Chet Doxas (best contemporary jazz album) and SwissbornMontrealer Félix Stüssi (traditional jazz album).Competing in the same category as Stüssi, and completing ourroundup, John MacLeod’s Rex Hotel Orchestra, a 20-piece ensembleformed in 2003, will be, where else, at the Rex on March 28 as partof their “last Monday of the month” residency there.Bet they all have some public school teacher or other to thank. —David Perlman, publisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote The Toronto Concert-Goer’s GuideVOLUME 16 NO 6 | MAR 1 – APR 7, 2011720 Bathurst St, Suite 503, Toronto ON M5S 2R4MAIN TELEPHONE 416-323-2232FAX 416-603-4791SWITCHBOARD & GENERAL INQUIRIES Ext 21Chairman of the BoardAllan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comPublisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comCD Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comEvent Advertising/MembershipKaren Ages | members@thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comListingsOri Dagan and Sharna Searle |listings@thewholenote.comJazz ListingsOri Dagan | jazz@thewholenote.comWebsiteBryson Winchester | systems@thewholenote.comCirculation, Display Stands & SubscriptionsChris Malcolm | circulation@thewholenote.comPatrick Slimmon | patrick@thewholenote.com6THE ONTARIO ARTS COUNCIL IS AN AGENCYOF THE GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO.THANKS TO THIS MONTH’S CONTRIBUTORSBeat ColumnsBANDSTAND | Jack MacQuarrieBOOKSHELF | Pamela MarglesCLASSICAL & BEYOND | David PerlmanCHORAL SCENE | Benjamin SteinEARLY MUSIC | Simone DesiletsIN THE CLUBS | Ori DaganJAZZ NOTES| Jim GallowayMUSIC’S CHILDREN | mJ buellIN WITH THE NEW | Jason van EykOPERA | Christopher HoileWORLD MUSIC | Andrew TimarFeaturesAlison Melville, Andrew Timar, ChristinaPetrowska Quilico, MJ Buell, Larry BeckwithCD ReviewersAlex Baran, Larry Beckwith,Geoff Chapman, Daniel Foley,Janos Gardonyi, Richard Haskell, Tiina Kiik,Roger Knox, Allan Pulker, Terry Robbins,Michael Schwartz, Sharna Searle,Bruce Surtees, Robert Tomas,Ken Waxman, Dianne WellsProofreadingKaren Ages, Sharna SearleListingsFelix Deak, Ori Dagan,Richard Haskell, Nick Torti, Sharna SearleLayout & DesignBrian Cartwright (cover), Uno RamatSUBSCRIPTIONS per year + HST (10 issues)www.thewholenote.comthewholenote.comUpcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Tuesday March 15Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Tuesday March 15Advertising Materials Due6pm Thursday March 17Publication DateWednesday March 30Next issue is Volume 16 No 7, coveringApril 1, 2011 – May 7, 2011WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibilityor liability for claims made for any product orservice reported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementFebruary 2010: 30,000 printed & distributed.Canadian Publication ProductSales Agreement 1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHOLENOTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.503-720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4COPYRIGHT © 2011 WHOLENOTE MEDIA INCMarch 1 - April 7, 2011
