And the 1997/98 season will see a continuation of our ongoing commitment to the commissioning of new Canadian repertoire with premiers of works by Gary Kulesha, the young Canadian composer Peter Koene, and the revival of a work by John Weinzweig. This classical choral ensemble of 70 voices has a core of professional singers and a professional chamber orchestra. Artistic Director, Chrys Bentley, named 1997 Musician of the Year in Mississauga, will conduct the MCS season beginning with Handel's Messiah on December 7. On February 15, Mozart's Requiem will be paired with Derek Holman's Magnificat, a work newly commissioned for MCS, to celebrate the opening of the Living Arts Centre. The season finishes with Brahms' Requiem in April. As well as the three concert-season, on December 3, MCS will perform as guests in the Mississauga Philharmonic Masterworks series, featuring Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and Brahms' Schicksalslied. Designed for the whole family, great classical music performances feature top professionals as well as brilliant young artists. A total of 17 concerts will be presented (11 different programs) in 1997-98 at Walter Hall, Willowdale United Church and at Rosedale Heights School. Within one series, enjoy instrumental soloists, chamber music, full symphony orchestra, vocal soloists and choral works. Mooredale brings to audiences wellknown and neglected works. Each concert is full of variety. A typical concert could include a short violin piece by a Canadian composer, a string trio by Boccherini and the Brahms Clarinet Quintet. as a trio of flute (Vicki Blechta), cello (Grigory Goldberg) and piano (Cecilia lgnatieff). Since then, the group has expanded to include oboist Senia Trabashnik and other 'friends' including mezzo soprano and viola. This unusual blend allows Musica Viva to offer out-of-the-ordinary repertoire from baroque to the present. The ensemble has ;;~ppeared throughout Ontario, has been on international French television, and has been broadcast live (from Glenn Gould Studio, CBC Toronto). In November 1995, the group released. their disc Entre No us, a collection of works written this century, referred to by one CBC announcer as just plain beautiful 20th century music. Their next disc, scheduled for 1998, will feature a recently commissioned Suite of Dances, written for Musica Viva by well known Canadian composer Larysa Kuzmenko. Their 1997 tour of European centres includes London, the Hague, Brussels and Edinburgh.
