Highlights of the 1997/98 season include Khachaturian's Masquerade Suite and Scarborough mezzo soprano Frances Pappas performing works under the direction of Dairine Ni Mheadra. Rimsky-Korsakov's spectacular Sheherezade will be featured in November along with soloists Maggie Moser, oboe and Jiewon Kim, violin from the SPO conducted by Gary Kulesha. Principal Pops conductor Howard Cable returns to delight our audience with his arrangements in You Must Remember This. Joining· Howard will be pianist Gene DiNovi. Our family concert is 100% Canadian this year and will include a musical setting of the children's story, Jeremy's Decision, led by Boris Brott. Our season finale features Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 and Mahler's Symphony No. 1 with conductor Jerome Summers and pianist Jason Li, the second Canadian to ever reach the semi-finals of the Tchaikovsky international Piano competition. The Shevchenko Musical Ensemble, Toronto's unique combination of male chorus, mandolin orchestra and folk dancers, after 46 years now welcomes female voices to its ranks. Its mission, reflected in a repertoire of folk, classical and contemporary music of Ukraine, Canada and other lands, remains unchanged--to perpetuate the finest of Ukrainian musical traditions and weave them with those of other Canadians. With a n impressive record of performances of the highest calibre, each Ensemble component (choir, orchestra or dance troupe) can perform on its own, but the Ensemble's uniqueness lies in its exciting presentations as a unified 90-person ensemble. The highlight of the first concert of concert of the Shevchenko School of Performing Arts for children (offering classes in folk dance, mandolin, voice and drama) was Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf arranged and choreographed for mandolin orchestra, narrator and young dancers. The group has appeared in Toronto and other Ontario cities, Montreal, Boston, and Leeds, England, and has been broadcast on CBC, CJRT, and American Public Radio. The group's first commercial CD, A Golden Treasury of Mediaeval Music · (Saydisc/Amon Ra, 1996), has been recommended by the American Record Guide as a first-rate introduction to the repertoire; Sine Nomine also provided the music for the award-winning PBS CD-ROM Inside the Vatican (1995). Winner of the 1996 Echo Klassic Award for Best Orchestra of the Year, Tafelmusik is pleased to announce its Toronto season at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church in the heart of Toronto's Annex district. The virtuosity and artistry of Tafelmusik and Music Director Jeanne Lamon will be displayed in programmes featuring the works of Bach, Handel, Rameau, Corelli, Vivaldi and Haydn. Cellist Anner _aylsma and recorder virtuoso Marion Verbruggen return to Tafelmusick's season and Dutch violinist Vera Beths will perform Beethoven's beloved Violin Concerto. Among the more intriguing programmes will be a concert version of Mozart's first opera, Bastien et Bastienne. The Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, under the director Ivar Taurins, will perform Haydn's Nelson Mass and Handel's Dixit Dominus and will also be featured in a programme devoted to music by Henry Purcell with renowned British tenor Paul Agnew. The choral highlight of the year promises to be Bach's St. John Passion at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. And, of course, the Tafelmusik season would not be complete without performances of Handel's Messiah and the ever-popular Sing-Along Messiah. On October 22, we present The TransAtlantic Trio featuring pianist/composer Peteris Plakidis, cellist lvars Bezprozvanovs, both from Latvia and American clarinetist Eric Mandat. Expect at least one premiere! Pianist Armands Abols, from Chile, performs on November 26. This multiple competition winner returns after a very successful appearance here in 1993. On March 11, 1998 we will hear Toronto's own Vilma lndra Vitols, mezzo soprano. This wonderful singer is quickly establishing a solid reputation, both here and in England, with her expressive performances and her intelligent and imaginative programming. The final concert features soprano lnese Galante (Date TBA). I:Ier recent CD of opera fvorites received rave reviews from Europe and landed her leading roles at Covent Garden.
