By now it is probably not news to most of you that the Canadian Opera Company has paid million for a city block at Queen and University, where it plans to build "a real opera house ... the quality of the opera in Munich, e.g . ... of which Canadians can be proud." We congratulate the COC administration and board. As the COC's press release pointed out, the project will " ... make a major contribution to the cultural and economic vitality of Toronto, Ontario and Canada." Here, for contrast though, is part of a letter which went out to 33 community choirs in Ontario in July: On behalf of the Ontario Arts Council, I am informing you that, due to recent budget cuts, the decision has been made to cancel the Community Choirs program. Regrettably, we must return the application you submitted to the February 15, 1997 deadline. The Ontario government recently reduced OAC's 1997/98 budget by million. This is the third cut in eighteen months, reducing our budget more than 40% from . 6 to .3 million." · Big private sector bucks for the COC shouldn't be hard to come by. But is the private sector any more capable than the Ontario government of thinking small? • • ONLY COMPREHENSIVE MONTHLY CLASSICAL CONTEMPORARY CONCERT LISTING SOURCE
