ULSE e TORONTO'S MUSIC e CLASSICAL & NEW 60 BELLEVUE AVENUE ToRONTO MST 2N4 (416) 603-3786; 603-3787 (fax) Volume 1, no. 2 October 1995 Hear •o•Say: Our readers write Liked it Dear PULSE I wish you much success. It's a real pleasure to have a monthly musical calendar of such a variety of musical events. I have even enjoyed the classified ads and look forward to your next issue. Inta Ridler Terrible title? Dear PULSE Loved the first issue of your 'zine. Loathe the "Toronto's music classical and new" tagline. To me classical means "dead western european white men's concert music." Don't strangle a good idea with too narrow a focus! L.F. Dear PULSE Since you invited a fuss about your definition of "new and classical," here's my "beef". If your "classical" is wide enough to include medieval music, how can your "new" not include jazz? E.Y. Hanley Points well taken! We're going month to month on this one. This time for example, jazz in clubs is out, jazz in concert is in! Points west PULSE: Hope you'll eventually make room for events outside Metro ... (Unless you bomb you will certainly outlast Metro, so you should be thinking about it.) •NoT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE IN TORONTo• 26 CUMBERLAND· TORONTO, ONTARIO· M4W 1J5 PHONE: (416) 960.8494 ·FAX: (416)960.1478 1 BLOCK NORTH OF BLOOR BETWEEN YONGE & BAY Stop in and see our new facilities: • All string music accessories, including hundreds of cases, strings, tuners, metronomes, classical videos & morel • An extensive assortment of over 6,000 bowed instrument sheet music pieces. •Early Developmenf'M Materials including Suzuki Books 1. • Our large selection of modem and ~ rare instruments & bows. {~~--- Even before then, though, how about a distribution point or two Mississaugaway. All readers note: if you have a suggestion for a drop off point for PULSE, call us at 603-3786. Index please DEAR PULSE: A request. If you have lots of listings coming, give us also please an index of the groups. Sometimes I have a night I want something for. Other times I have a group I want to follow. Rick Sharpe No sooner said .... No City of TO. libraries yet Dear PULSE I don't get it. Black Creek Library in North York had PULSE, Riverdale Library didn't? Ben Scott We're probably going to have to wait. City of Toronto policy is no new free publications in City libraries till they've survived one year. We welcome comment. Compiling this month's listings, we noticed for the first time that they offer tickets for to students with a current student card. (We were all set to trumpet this fact as news, only to discover they've been doing so since 1991!) Phone 366- 7723. Now the Canadian Opera Company, in best Canadian fashion, reports having "taken a leaf from Lincoln Center in New York and rethought our approach to young adults." They are offering anyone between the ages of 18 and 29 a " package" which includes one ticket, the privilege of purchasing additional "best available" tickets for , and various other discounts and benefits. For information, phone the COC's subscription office at 363-8231. The Music Gallery is distributing a total of 3000 vouchers to students at York University, Ontario College of Art, Faculty of Music at U of T, and the music department at Humber College. Each voucher is good for one free concert at the Music Gallery. Distribution of the vouchers is being handled by the individual institutions. And Lauren Pratt of Music Matrix (phone 785-8707) is the person to call if you are a registered student interested in getting a student music "passport" good for substantially reduced admission to a wide range of new music events. Blue Friday?? "Every Friday Lee and Kim and the gang stay home to study their Pulse listings and listen to CJRT"? Not likely. But they don't take in live . classical music either. A cursory glance at our October listings shows that Friday is consistently slim classical pickings in our town. We'd expected Mondays to be relatively uneventful (and they are) but Fridays? Have we discovered an unexplored niche for music presenters seeking elbow room? Or does everyone else know something about Lee and Kim (and Fridays) that we don't? (Speaking of Fridays, it's ironic that the only 2 events on Friday 20 are both operas on classical themes by English composers. One is Opera Anonymous' production (the first in Toronto in over 20 years) of Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia. The other is the rarely produced Venus and Adonis by the 18th century composer, John Blow, produced by Opera Atelier, recently returned from a heady stay at Versailles, where they performed Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.) But what if they make a name for themselves? The Sine Nomine Medieval Ensemble has been busy of late. In Leeds England this summer performing at International Medieval Congress II, they also recorded a CD for Saydisc Records, reputed to be "Britain's most remarkable record company." And since returning to Canada they have recorded music for a CD ROM version of Sir Peter Ustinov's television programme "Inside the Vatican" for PBS. You can hear them live (in the first of a four concert series) on Friday October 13. Erotikos Logos New Music Concerts opens its season with the performance of three song-cycles by Greekborn Toronto composer, Christos Hatzis. Hatzis, who studied in Greece, at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and at SUNY in Buffalo, has the rare distinction of being a composer who has earned his living writing commissioned works, which he has done since coming to Canada in 1982. In that period he has written over 40 commissions. Hatzis has recently been appointed professor of theory and composition at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. His concert will be at the Glenn Gould Studio on October 28 (see listings). You can hear another of his compositions Melisma performed by clarinettist Jean-Guy Boisvert at the Music Gallery Oct 27.
