CHORAL Scene by Larry

CHORAL Scene by Larry Beckwith Vancouver Chamber Choir's John Washburn As we head into the summer months, choral concerts are few and far between in the city of Toronto, but I'm happy to point WholeNote readers to some of the many great events involving choirs on the festival circuit. The Elmer Iseler Singers kick off the Collingwood Music Festival on July 8. And the Amadeus Choir and Bach Children's Chorus are guests of the Festival of the Sound on July 30 for a fascinating-sounding program in celebration of the remarkable Canadian painter Doris Mc Carthy, with projected artwork, in the perfect setting of the Festival's picturesque Stockey Theatre. Incidentally, this will be the first time in a good many years that the lseler Singers themselves have not made the trip to Parry Sound. The Elora Festival opens on July 14 with a gala performance (in the barn) of the Requiem by Mozart, conducted by Festival artistic director Noel Edison. This is one of the few concerts that Edison is conducting this summer. Instead he has a wonderful roster of guest conductors coming in to lead the Elora Festival Singers in a wide array of repertoire. The concerts include a Bach cantata evening and "Music from the Sistine Chapel", directed by Christopher Jackson, of the Studio Musique Ancienne de Montreal, and a fascinating program of contemporary choral repertoire conducted by the young award-winning Peter Dijkstra from the Netherlands. Canada's legendary Wayne Riddell conducts in the final week, including the annual closing concert "The Church in Song", narrated by John Fraser. Stratford Summer Music hosts the Vancouver Chamber Choir at the beginning of August for four eclectic programs, directed by VCC stalwart Jon Washburn. Later in August, Howard Dyck's Kitchener-Waterloo Philharmonic Choir closes the Festival with a Mozart celebration. Also in August, Boris Brott's festival in the Hamilton area gives what seems to me an annual performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. A little further afield, there is much choral singing at both the Lanaudiere Festival in Quebec and the Indian River Festival in PEI. In addition to a Festival performance of the Requiem by Faure, Lanaudiere plays host to the Nathaniel Dett Chorale on July 16, and the Vancouver Chamber Choir near the end of July.
