The way this magazine is put together, the colour part (the wrapp·er)has to go to the printer way ahead of the newsprint part (the"guts" we call it). This means that if the table of contents goes inthe wrapper, we're tak.ing a chance. (There are a couple of storiesI could tell .... )More often. than not, though, the co11sequence is not someembarrassing error glaringly exposed, but rather some sin of omissionor understatement in ·the table of c'ontents .,- something thatshould have been trumpe.ted, being so tentatively expressed thatit passes almost unnoticed. The line " Special:· Summer MusicEducation" in this month's contents is a good example. The featurein question (page 56) is actually a preview of a more extensivetreatment of the topic coming up in March. But for those ofyou who don't want to wait, it's got all the information you need, right as we enter the year's dreariest days, to start happily websurfingyour way toward the glorious summer ahead.Part of my well-documented, and some would say chronic, inabilityto write this column before the last possible moment is nodoubt psychological and deep rooted, going back to packing forthe family holidays that were part of my particular African herit- ·age. You knew that you'd better not close the trunk (the "boot"we'd have said) until everything was packed, because reopeningonce closed with contents compressed was a recipe for disaster. So part of it is definitely wanting that satisfying last-"slam"."Boot's full" I get to say, once I slam this particular lid.But the other part of it is just for the genuine pleasure of beingthe magazine's first reader, getting to be struck by the particularsof one piece or another, or by insights resulting from happy accidentsof juxtaposition. The fact that the cover story and our main feature this month,·are both about conductors was quite. unplanned. But now thatthey're there, each story enhances the other. How long will it be,I found my self wondering, before "that young Canadian conductorYanni.ck Nezet-Seguin" gets to regale writers with an anecdotelike the one that kicks off Pam Margles' entertaining accountof the irrepressible Nicholas McGegan.A newspaperman I have always respected one~ said to me thata "great little thing" about WholeNote is the extent to which theadvertising is for most of our readers of the same interest as oureditorial content. "It's a rarer thing than you might realize" hesaid. This month I'm particularly reminded of his point. I can'tmention specific ads here (CSME guidelines, you know) but thereare some stories in the making in more than one of them. for sure."Do I reference February as Black History Month or AfricanHeritage Month" one of my editorial colleagues inquired as wewere entering the home stretch this issue. "Don't know. I'm seeingit both ways" I replied. Truth be told, I've always .been inclinedto scoff' at everything having to be Chosen Cause Day orWee.k or Month or Year. My reasoning 'has always been that ratherthan calling attention to the cause in question it gives peoplepermission to do the courtesy nod, then return to a state of denialor disregard.I'm changing my mind, though. This month's Heritage or Historylabel seems less like tokenism and more like the gift of aspecial. If I hold up that lens to the Chosen Day or Month, itenables me to realize that the .thing I am only now seeing, isactually always out there. Look at the listings. African Heritageand Black History ri'pple under the skin of our collective culture,an inherent part of who we collectively are becoming.Colin Eatock senses something similar in this month's T.O. Diary,I think. But he takes the idea beyond one particular heritageto the· changes "World Music". is bringing to 0ur city's culturalsense of s.elf. I sense t!ie same momentum he does, and just asmuch as the prospect of getting to web-surf for summer camps, itgives me, at this dreariest time of year, hope for renewal.David PerlmanGREAT CHAMBER MUSIC DOWNTOWNPETER BARRETTCAPTIVATINGRising star baritone with pianistPETER TIEFENBACH singsSchumann, Brahms, Finzi &Mercure:Thursday February 1 at 8 pmFINE ARTS QUARTETA 60-YEAR FRANCHISEDistinguished quartet celebrates its unparalleledlongevity.
