World Viewby Karen AgesWhile it's not customary forWholeNote to review concertsin detail, I'd like toopen by congratulating sopranoDenise Williams ona job well done. Her CDrelease concert "Walk TogetherChildren", a Blackand Jewish cultural mix, drew a healthy crowd at theAl Green Theatre on February11th. The programincluded spirited renditionsof African-American andCaribbean songs as well assoulful and tender Yiddishfavourites, displaying amastery of the language andspirit of what she refers toas her "adopted culture".Denise was ably backed upby Brahm Goldhamer andNina Shapilsky on piano/keyboards, and others.February is a really shortmonth but I'm still optimistic that at least some readers willsee this in time to get over to theMusic Gallery on March 2 to hearthe Orchid Ensemble and JengYi, representing two Asian traditions.Vancouver's Orchid Ensembleis one of Canada's best knownChinese instrumental groups, blending traditional music with othergenres including contemporaryand jazz. The ensemble activelycommissions new works by NorthAmerican composers, and regularlycollaborates with musicians fromother cultures. Toronto' s Jeng Yiis a Korean drum and dance ensembleperforming both traditionaland contemporary works . Formedin 1998, the group has performedat many festivals and provided accompanimentto Peter Chin's dancework Bite. This promises to be anexciting double bill.David Buchbinder is a busyman this month. Ma rch 4 , he andhis wife, the amazing bellydancerRoula Said, prese nt another PurimCaba ret, at the Lula Lounge. If you missed it last year (as I did),you' ll have another chance to experiencethis Jewish holiday traditionof masquerade and merry-makingpresented by David, Roula anda host of others. Later in themonth, Buchbinder' s F lying Bulgar Klezmer Band, who will celebratetheir 20th annive rsary nextFebruary, perform at the TranzacHossein Alizadeh of HamavayanEnsemble. They come to the GeorgeWeston Recital Hall March 9.(March 11 and 18); and you canhear David on trumpet in the "klezmermeets jazz" series at Mezzetta's restaurant (St. Clair) alongwith guitarist Brian Katz onMarch 14, and with accordionistJoe Macerollo at the Bella DidYa Eat? brunch at the Free TimesCafe on March 18.
