The programincluded spirited renditionsof African-American andCaribbean songs as well assoulful and tender Yiddishfavourites, displaying amastery of the language andspirit of what she refers toas her "adopted culture".Denise was ably backed upby Brahm Goldhamer andNina Shapilsky on piano/keyboards, and others.February is a really shortmonth but I'm still optimistic that at least some readers willsee this in time to get over to theMusic Gallery on March 2 to hearthe Orchid Ensemble and JengYi, representing two Asian traditions.Vancouver's Orchid Ensembleis one of Canada's best knownChinese instrumental groups,blending traditional music with othergenres including contemporaryand jazz. The ensemble activelycommissions new works by NorthAmerican composers, and regularlycollaborates with musicians fromother cultures. Toronto' s Jeng Yiis a Korean drum and dance ensembleperforming both traditionaland contemporary works . Formedin 1998, the group has performedat many festivals and provided accompanimentto Peter Chin's dancework Bite. This promises to be anexciting double bill.David Buchbinder is a busyman this month.
