foR OPENERS •••"After a certain point I did have to be here until I'ddone what I started to do. I don't think it could beanything I could live with otherwise. A lot has to do withbuilding something which is bigger than last night'sperformance. Building a company that will go on afterme - that's satisfying."(Richard Bradshaw in conversation with Pam Margles, Feb 2005)The morning of August 16th, the Canadian Opera Companywas very much on my mind. I'd misplaced a whole swatchof listings that they'd sent me, for September and October, and was scrambling to meet a deadline. I called their prdepartment, got a live person on the phone, and within fiveminutes had what I needed. Or so I thought.Half an hour later I was on the phone again, having realizedthat in my deadline-driven panicky haste I'd only requestedone of the two batches of listings I needed. Again withinfive minutes I had what I lacked. Plain sailing, nothingamiss. Business as usual.Except that, as we were all about to discover, less than anhour after that, there was nothing usual about that particularday .That's why the little fragment of Pam Margles' interviewwith Richard Bradshaw seems particularly resonant rightnow . I think he'd have taken a particularly intense satisfactionfrom the fact that on that particular day "his people"kept on doing their ordinary work in their ordinarilythorough and meticulous way .There' s another fitting twist to this little story. As ithappens, what I was calling for, that morning of August 16,was not the listings for the COC's mainstage productions, but for the concerts--the dozens of daytime concerts -- thatwill take place this season, as they did for the first time lastyear, in the, now alas all too fittingly named, RichardBradshaw Amphitheatre, in the lobby of the opera housethat is home to a company that has every hope of being ableto carry on without him, in large part because he helpedbuild it to do just that.David PerlmanWHO'S READING WHOLENOTE?Calling all readers! You are invited torespond to ourmini-survey forthe chance towin greatperformancetickets - andhelp WholeNote toserve you better.LOG ON TO WIN!www.thewholenote.com orsee page 55 for a printed version of the survey.GREAT CHAMBER MUSIC DOWNTOWN2007-08 SEASONSUBSCRIPTION SERIESQUARTETSTh.
