See Dec 1 .52Jim Galloway's Jazz Notes continued from page 20music, ranking as highly in thegenre as Oscar Peterson andGlenn Gould in theirs.Ragtime was, however, onlyone facet of this multi-talentedartist. John Arpin enjoyedconsiderable success as arecording artist, composer, arranger and conductor. He was rich in the diversity ofhi.s interests and passionateabout all of them. A uniquevoice is silent, but fortunately heleaves a wealth of music throughwhich he will always be withJohn Arpinus .Indeed, as I look back over 2007 it hardly qualifies as avintage year for jazz. On a personal level I probably lost more oldfriends than I made new ones. As Clark Terry said, "The GoldenYears suck!" But hope springs eternal and, with an acknowledgementto comedian and political satirist, Mort Sahl - born in Montreal,by the way - and his album from 1958, it is safe to say that "TheFuture Lies Ahead". Mort Sahl, by the way, opened quite frequentlyfor Dave Brubeck concerts. You might even say he was a jazzcomedian in that he would take a theme, develop it, lead into otherideas and then come back to his original topic. If you don't knowhim you might want to check him out. Here's a thought for the festive season. If you are outcelebrating at a concert hall, club or restaurant, spare a thought forthe people who have to work so that you can enjoy. On the otherhand you might want to think about the jazz players who are at homebecause they don't have a gig! Some events coming up that will be of interest if you likeyour jazz to swing: Jazz.PM's Sound Of Jazz Series at The Old Millwill feature Dick Hyman, one of the most talented and versatilepianists on the planet. The date for your calendar is December 10.Then on January 7th I'll be taking a sextet into The Mill for anevening of the music of Johnny Hodges, featuring some of thelesser-known Hodges gems laced with a few standards. For the festive season, on New Year's Eve, clarinettist BobDeAngelis and his Champagne Symphony will take over RoyThomson for the second year in a row with a tribute to BennyGoodman. There will be guest performances by vocalist MelissaStylianou, Frank Wright on vibes and the Swing Dance Divas.Let's hope the New Year will bring more ups than downs and thatyou will enjoy a surfeit of happy live listening.Featuring some of Toronto's best jazz musicianswith a brief reflection by Jazz Vespers ClergySunday, Dec. 16 - 4:30 p.m.BARLOW BRASS & DRUMSChristmas JazzSunday, Jan. 6 - 4:30 p.m.CANADIAN JAZZ QUARTETSunday, Feb. 3 - 4:30 p.m.THE NANCY WALKER TRIOSunday, Feb. 20 - 4:30 p.m.GORDON SHEARD - pianoChrist Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street(north of St. Clair at Heath St.) 416-920-5211Admission is free.An offering is received to support the work of the church, Including Jazz Vespers.WWW.
