I wasfinally allowed to start piano at fivebut switched to the organ at age ten, when my feet reached the pedals. Iwas intrigued by the organ and themany sounds it could produce .. .it's asclose as you can get to being a onepersonorchestra. At age 16 I sang with the choir ofSt. Simon's Anglican Church in Torontoto learn the repertoire; half ayear later I became the assistant organist.Conducting came along with my first organist job: St. Luke'sUnited on Sherbourne Street in Toronto. Suddenly I had a choir and aprofessional quartet to conduct. I was 18. I made many mistakes, butquickly learned what works in theory and what works in the real world. After St. Simon's, I sang with the Faculty of Music Concert Choirfor two years. Both taught me that singing is not one of my strengths. What are your strengths?Playing the organ can be lonely. I love being with people and bring alot of enthusiasm to my choirs. After all, what can be better than workingtogether to create music? It is such a thrill to explore a masterpiece, and I never cease to marvel at the profound truths inherent ingreat art.Currently?I am in my 17th season as conductor of the Toronto Classical Singers,a 100-voice choir that performs large-scale oratorios withorchestra. I am very excited to be the new conductor of the RenaissanceSingers, a chamber choir based in the Kitchener area, whereI'm enjoying working on more intimate repertoire. I teach a course inoratorio performance for graduate voice majors at the Glenn Gould!'Violins, violas, cellos, and bowsComplete line of strings and accessoriesExpert repairs and rehairsCanada's largest stock of string musicFast mail order serviceBrass - Woodwind -String Instruments - GuitarBuy direct from the DistributorAUTHORIZED DEALER FOR:Armstrong, Artley, Besson, Buffet,Conn, Getzen, Holton, Jupiter,Keilworth, King, Noblet,Selmer, Vito, YanagisawaMUSIC BOOKSBEST SELECTIONOF POPULAR&EDUCATIONAL MUSICPiano - Guitar - Instrumental905-477-11412650 John Street, Unit 15Uust North of Steeles)www.harknettmusic.com24WWW. School of the RCM, and I serve asthe titular organist at St. John'sAnglican Church in Elora, whichhas a professional choir of 24 singersunder the direction of NoelEdison. I am also the GeneralManager of the Elora Festival andSingers.I enjoyed my time at the CBCvery much, but I always felt I wasa musician who happened to beworking in radio, rather than abroadcaster who happened to be amusician. I am very glad to be ableto devote more time to actuallymaking music. What do you admire in a conductor?I admire conductors who serve themusic. Ego-driven performancesget tired very quickly ...I remember being at Roy ThomsonHall for a performance by theEnglish Concert led by Trevor Pinnock. This was the earlyl980s: concertstended to be much more formalthan today. The maestros weremostly formidable and unapproachable.Mr. Pinnock walkedin, bowed, and sat down at the harpsichord. He gave a huge smile tohis musicians, and off they went, playing orchestral music withchamber intensity and precisionthat was very rare. It was a teameffort, and they were obviouslyhaving a good time. I try to bringthat sort of spirit wherever I go.Looking ahead? Two concerts which I am particularlylooking forward to: In Marchthe Renaissance Singers will bepresenting music from the Renaissancecontrasted with music fromthe "new choral renaissance" byPart, Lauridsen, and Tavener. .. itwill be a wonderfully reflectiveconcert. In May the Toronto ClassicalSingers will perform theBrahms Requiem, a work I'vebeen wanting to conduct for manyyears.Jurgen Petrenko will conduct theRenaissance Singers (Nov. 29,Kitchener) in Rejoice: Vivaldi,Bach, Handel (Messiah excerpts);and the Toronto Classical Singers(Dec. 7, Toronto) in Messiah Highlights:with soprano JenniferTavener, mezz.o Sandra Boyes, tenorCory Knight, bass MichaelUloth, and the Talisker PlayersOrchestra.BOSLEYREAL ESTATED0SLEY ~Er\L ESTATE lTD ..
