FOR OPENERS / DAVID

FOR OPENERS / DAVID PERLMANFrom Pitching Pecaut Square in June to Manning a Booth at Yonge-Dundas September 3It’s a Whole New SummerIt’s hard to believe that at the moment of writing this (June 28),with this July/August combined issue not yet on the street, anotheredition of Luminato has already roared through town and the TDToronto Jazz festival is nearly half over. David Pecaut (formerlyMetro Square) has had its new musical tires well and truly kicked.Looks like the new square in town might have some staying power asa musical place.Equally hard to believe, when our next issue hits the street August 31(after a very well earned break, I might add), we’ll still be three daysaway from one last urban musical party of the summer — the annualten hour New Music Marathon at Yonge-Dundas Square. The event isthe brainchild of CONTACT Contemporary Music’s Jerry Pergolesi, and you’ll find us (The WholeNote) among the groups there, first issueof the regular season already in hand to give away. It is impossible toimagine that we will be as tired and grumpy then as we are right now,at the end of a gruelling year. So drop by for a chat, and stay for awhile to let your ears be surprised by something new.Speaking of venues, it’s fascinating to watch how thoroughly andrapidly Koerner Hall at the Royal Conservatory’s Telus Centre haswoven itself into the fabric of the city’s musical life. Partly it has todo with the Hall’s own concert series, with Mervon Mehta wieldinghis curatorial baton with extraordinary deftness. And partly it has todo with the range and quality of the existing musical organizationsthat have recognized the Hall’s potential and stepped forward to rentit, providing the Hall with a consistently high calibre of musical occupancy.TD Jazz and Luminato are the two most recent cases in point. But the venue now features significantly in the plans of literally dozensof other ensembles eager to carry what they do to a new level. Sometest the waters with one-off galas. Some plan one larger scale concertfor Koerner in their season. Some take the plunge and risk all, as EspritOrchestra did last season, and will do again this year. One that has been interesting to watch is Toronto Summer Musicwhich was incubated (as so many other initiatives have been over theyears) in the U of T’s Faculty of Music, just a stone’s throw downPhilosopher’s Walk from Koerner. Last year, by my count, TSM hadthree concerts at Koerner, this year, eight. Now if the powers that be at the RC would just find a way to let TheWholeNote back into the Telus Centre. It’s something to do with freepublications not fitting their brand. Then students at the RC aspiringto the heights of musical glory displayed on the Koerner’s stage couldalso be reminded, daily, of the thousands of opportunities this townaffords to work incrementally towards their dreams. From all of us to all of you, our wishes for a restorative and musicallyadventurous summer, wherever you may find yourselves.—David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote The Toronto Concert-Goer’s GuideVOLUME 16 NO 10 | JULY 1–SEPTEMBER 7, 2011720 Bathurst St, Suite 503, Toronto ON M5S 2R4MAIN TELEPHONE 416-323-2232FAX 416-603-4791SWITCHBOARD & GENERAL INQUIRIES Ext 21Chairman of the BoardAllan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comPublisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comCD Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comEvent Advertising/MembershipKaren Ages | members@thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comListings CoordinatorsSharna Searle, Ori Daganlistings@thewholenote.comjazz@thewholenote.comWebsiteBryson Winchester | systems@thewholenote.comCirculation, Display Stands & SubscriptionsChris Malcolm | circulation@thewholenote.comPatrick Slimmon | patrick@thewholenote.comTHANKS TO THIS MONTH’S CONTRIBUTORSCover PhotoSN BiancaBeat ColumnsBANDSTAND | Jack MacQuarrieBOOKSHELF | Pamela MarglesCLASSICAL & BEYOND | Allan PulkerCHORAL SCENE | Benjamin SteinDISCOVERIES | David OldsEARLY MUSIC | Simone DesiletsIN THE CLUBS | Ori DaganJAZZ NOTES| Jim GallowayMUSICAL LIFE | mJ buellOPERA | Christopher HoileWORLD MUSIC | Andrew TimarFeaturesDavid Perlman, Andrew TimarCD ReviewersAlex Baran, Larry Beckwith, Geoff Chapman,Ori Dagan,Daniel Foley, Janos Gardonyi,Richard Haskell, Tiina Kiik, Roger Knox,John Laroque, Leslie Mitchell-Clarke,Cathy Riches, Terry Robbins, Michael Schwartz,Sharna Searle, Bruce Surtees, Andrew Timar,Robert Tomas, Ken Waxman, Dianne WellsProofreadingKaren Ages, Sharna SearleListingsOri Dagan, Richard Haskell,Felix Deak, Sharna SearleLayout & DesignBrian Cartwright (cover), Uno RamatSUBSCRIPTIONS per year + HST (10 issues)www.thewholenote.comUpcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Monday August 15Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Wednesday August 17Advertising Materials Due6pm Thursday August 18Publication DateWednesday August 31Next issue, Volume 17 No 1is the start of our 17th season and coversSeptember 1 to October 7, 2011WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibilityor liability for claims made for any product orservice reported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementJune 2011: 30,000 printed & distributed.Canadian Publication ProductSales Agreement 1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHOLENOTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.503–720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4COPYRIGHT © 2011 WHOLENOTE MEDIA INC6 thewholenote.comJuly 1–September 7, 2011
