FOR OPENERS | DAVID

FOR OPENERS | DAVID PERLMANThe More It Changes ...The more it changes, the More It Stays The Same” is one ofthose catch phrases that, if left unexamined, can be reliedon to ladle out doses of either chagrin or consolation tothe patient to whom it is being administered. Whether it“tastes awful but works” or just plain tastes awful, dependson one’s feelings about the desirability of change in theaspect of life being treated. Like the phrase “double-edged sword”(which by the way sounds like a pretty good idea to me) it all dependshow you grasp it.Take this magazine for example. We are unrecognizably all grownup from the little four-page black and white tabloid that hit the streetsfor the first time in August 1995, but still as clearly committed to renderingthe most comprehensive account we can of the astonishing livemusic scene in the region we serve; still committed as ever to doing sofree of charge to the vast majority of our readers; and still committedto keeping our concert listings free of charge, without fear or favour,to any presenter whose music fits our mandate. “Good ol’ WholeNote,”you might say. “The more it changes ...”If you are a presenter whose genre of music fits our mandate andtherefore makes it into our listings, you’d probably agree, even morevociferously if what you present also falls neatly into one of the clearlydefined beat areas by which our columns are arranged. And if youpresent your concerts in one of the areas we serve best with our amazingnetwork of distribution points. “Good ol’ WholeNote.” Indeed. If you are not, though, you’re more likely to mutter darkly:“WholeNote? The more it changes ...” without benefit of the prefatory“good old.”Sitting here at the publisher’s desk contemplating what to say as theold year gets all wound up prior to making its exit, I am not so muchin a stew as to whether the catch phrase applies to us in a positive ornegative way. Rather I find myself wondering whether it remains trueat all. Whether we are talking about concerts that straddle genres anddefy categorization, or the media that people use to gather and shareinformation, or the shifting shape of the concert form, or indeed thevery role of music making in people’s lives, the comforting old sawseems somehow to ring hollow. “The more it changes, the more it changes”is how it seems to me.As a delightful counterpoint to this month’s cover story, David Olds,in his CD Editor’s Corner on page 73, tells a little story about the firstever visit of Luciano Berio to Toronto in 1972 and the highly successfulmedia campaign mounted at that time to put the proverbial bumsin seats. It’s not clear to me what the equivalent campaign would benow, forty years down the ’pike.Hard to say what changes the next year will bring. But I think it’s safeto say that nothing we do will be left unexamined as we move ahead. We look forward to our readers’ input and goodwill as we gear forchange.—publisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote The Toronto Concert-Goer’s GuideVolume 18 No 4 | DEC 1, 2012 – FEB 7, 2013720 Bathurst St., Suite 503Toronto ON M5S 2R4Main Telephone 416-323-2232Fax 416-603-4791Switchboard & General Inquiries Ext 21Chairman of the Board | Allan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comPublisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comAssociate Editor | Paul Enniseditorial@thewholenote.comCD Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comEvent Advertising/MembershipKaren Ages | members@thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comDirector of MarketingGarry Page | marketing@thewholenote.comListings DepartmentSharna Searle | Listings Editorlistings@thewholenote.comOri Dagan | Associate Editor: Jazz, The ETCeterasjazz@thewholenote.com, etc@thewholenote.comWebsiteBryson Winchester | systems@thewholenote.comCirculation, Display Stands & SubscriptionsChris Malcolm | circulation@thewholenote.comPatrick Slimmon | patrick@thewholenote.comOMDC and The Ontario Arts Councilare agencies of the Government of OntarioThanks to THIS month’s contributorsBeat ColumnistsART OF SONG | Hans de GrootBandstand | Jack MacQuarrieclassical & beyond | Sharna SearleChoral scene | Benjamin Steindiscoveries | David OldsEarly Music | Simone Desiletsin the clubs | Ori Daganin with the new | David PerlmanJazz notes | Jim GallowayMusical life | mJ buellmusic theatre | Robert WallaceON Opera | Christopher HoileWorld VIEW | Andrew TimarFeaturesPaula Citron, Rebecca Chua,Adam WeinmannCD ReviewersLarry Beckwith, Stuart Broomer, Hans de Groot,Jim Galloway, Janos Gardonyi, Richard Haskell,Tiina Kiik, Jack MacQuarrie, Leslie Mitchell-Clarke,Christina Petrowska Quilico, Cathy Riches,Terry Robbins, Michael Schwartz,Bruce Surtees, Robert Tomas,Ken Waxman, Dianne WellsProofreadingPaul Ennis, Karen Ages,Ori Dagan, Adam WeinmannListingsOri Dagan, Sharna Searle, Adam Weinmann,Richard Haskell, Ondrej GoliasLayout & DesignUno RamatSubscriptions per year + HST (10 issues)Upcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Tuesday January 15Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Tuesday January 15Advertising Materials Due6pm Thursday January 17Publication DateFriday, February 1Next issue, Volume 18 No 5 coversFebrurary 1 to March 7, 2013WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibility orliability for claims made for any product or servicereported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementNovember 2012: 30,000 printed & distributed.Canadian Publication Product Sales Agreement1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHolenoTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.503–720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4Copyright © 2012 WholeNote Media Incthewholenote.com6 thewholenote.com December 1 – February 7, 2013
