FOR OPENERS | DAVID PERLMANSeeing ... Orange?“SEEING RED” is a cut-and-dried emotional state — no ifs, ands orbuts about it. Someone gets your goat, pushes a very particular buttonand, bingo! Rage, remorse and, if one has a sympathetic judge, communityservice and anger management courses. There are however those other situations where one hesitates topush the red rage button, even if only briefly, while trying to figure outwhether one has actually been offended. “Are you talking to me?” DiNiro’scharacter in Taxi Driver would say at that point, giving the otherparty an opportunity to say something like “No actually, but thank youfor asking. Because I can see why you would have been rather offendedif that were the case.”“SEEING ORANGE” you might call this slightly more circumspectapproach to things — a warm haze that can turn either into a glow ofcontentment or into blazing anger, once one has ascertained whetherone was being laughed at or laughed with, truly lauded or merelydamned with faint praise.Well it seems that our inaugural Orange Pages education directory, launched in March, has the eminent educator Sterling Beckwith “seeingorange” in more ways than one. This is why, in 391 words’ time, Iwill temporarily cede this thunderer’s podium to him, to say preciselywhat is on his mind. (For those of you who dare to admit that you don’tknow who Sterling Beckwith is, one theory has it that he was namedafter a studio in the Department of Music at York University, well usednot just for intimate musical performance but for workshops, seminars, symposia and the like — events related to his own personal passionwhich is music education. Before he does though, here are two or three other things I’dlike to note.VANCOUVER VIEW POINT: As devoted readers of this little essayboth know, we have a habit here at The WholeNote, when taking onnew things, of learning to swim by diving into what we hope is the deepend and striking out for the far side. Take last month’s column, WestCoast Notes, exploring the music scene in Victoria BC, for an example. Not content with just asking Ian Alexander to write about the musicscene in his relatively newly adopted home town, we positioned thepiece under the rubric “Canadian View Points,” evoking the grandvision of dipping our stylus in the Pacific and heading off on a grandcross-country adventure, acquiring loyal local correspondents as wego, laying the groundwork for the gathering and dissemination of vitalinformation about live local musical activity coast to coast to coast ... butwithout having the foggiest idea what the very next step should be.Well, either fortune favours the brave or fate smiles on fools, buteither way, it’s opera to the rescue, as OPERA America and Opera.cadescend on Vancouver in early May for a major conference, and ChristinaLoewen of Opera.ca steps into the cross-Canada batter’s box withour second Canadian View Points report. Loewen being Toronto based, and the conference being a one-off event rather than part of the ongoingVancouver scene, we’ll still have to find someone “on the ground”in Vancouver to carry the ball on an ongoing basis. So if you’re readingthis in the Canadian left coast’s largest city, and don’t mind diving inthe deep end, get in touch. And would-be correspondents anywhereeast of Vancouver with an ongoing live local music picture to paint, take note. We’re coming your way.And now, Mr. Beckwith, over to you.—David Perlman, publisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote Volume 18 No 7 | APR 1 – MAY 7, 2013Centre for Social Innovation720 Bathurst St., Suite 503, Toronto ON M5S 2R4phone 416-323-2232 | Fax 416-603-4791Publisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comChairman of the Board | Allan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comEDITORIALAssociate Editor | Paul Enniseditorial@thewholenote.comListings Editor | Sharna Searlelistings@thewholenote.comRecordings Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comClub Listings Editor | Ori Daganjazz@thewholenote.comSALES, MARKETING & MEMBERSHIPConcerts & Events/Membership | Karen Agesmembers@thewholenote.comRetail Sales/Marketing | Garry Pagemarketing@thewholenote.comDirectories | Adam Weinmanneducation @ thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comClassified Ads | classad@thewholenote.comWebsite/Systems | Bryson WinchesterBryson Winchester | systems@thewholenote.comCirculation/Subscriptions | Chris Malcolmcirculation@thewholenote.comSubscriptions per year + HST (10 issues)Thanks to this month’s contributorsBeat ColumnistsART OF SONG | Hans de GrootBandstand | Jack MacQuarrieChoral scene | Benjamin Steinclassical & beyond | Sharna Searlediscoveries | David OldsEarly Music | Simone Desiletsin the clubs | Ori Daganin with the new | Wendalyn BartleyJazz notes | Jim GallowayMusic theatre | Robert WallaceMusical life | mJ buellON Opera | Christopher Hoilecanadian view POints | Christina LoewenWorld VIEW | Andrew TimarFeaturesPaula Citron, Sterling BeckwithCD ReviewersStuart Broomer, Daniel Foley, Janos Gardonyi,Nic Gotham, Richard Haskell, Tiina Kiik,Roger Knox, Daniel Moore,Christina Petrowska Quilico, Allan Pulker,Cathy Riches, Terry Robbins, Michael Schwartz,Bruce Surtees, Robert Tomas, Ken WaxmanProofreadingSharna Searle, Paul EnnisListingsSharna Searle, Ori Dagan, Adam Weinmann,Ondrej Golias, Richard Haskell,JennieLea McLeish, Ruth AtwoodLayout & DesignUno RamatThe Ontario Arts Councilis an ageNCY of the Government of oNTARioUpcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Monday April 15Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Monday April 15Advertising Materials Due6pm Thursday April 18Publication DateTuesday April 30Next issue, Volume 18 No 8 coversMay 1 to June 7, 2013WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibility orliability for claims made for any product or servicereported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementMarch 2013: 30,000 printed & distributedCanadian Publication Product Sales Agreement1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHOLENOTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.Centre for Social Innovation503–720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4Copyright © 2013 WholeNote Media Incthewholenote.com6 | April 1 – May 7, 2013 thewholenote.com

EDUCATIONBrave New WhirlA Letter to the Publisher, The WholeNote Magazineby Sterling BeckwithDear David,Congratulations on breaking throughthe “Education Barrier” at last! Theinaugural version of the Orange Pagesin your March 2013 issue is a longawaitedstep forward for your magazine, and for all of us in the GTA who havecome to depend on its monthly calendarof musical events. Great to see theless glamorous but still essential activitiesof teaching and learning finallyrepresented — so readably, and nicelyillustrated too — as an integral part ofOrange PagesDirectoryMarch 2013The WholeNote.Almost every one of your readers, Iwould bet, is involved somehow or other in music education. These days, most working musicians, whatever their specialty, probably derive atleast part of their livelihood from giving music lessons; while the numberof publicly or privately supported schools offering music instruction inevery corner of the GTA seems to increase each year. Anyone attemptingan exhaustive catalogue of musical training opportunities here wouldprobably need a whole volume of orange-hued issues to cover them all.continues on page 59thewholenote.com April 1 – May 7, 2013 | 7
