FOR OPENERS | DAVID

FOR OPENERS | DAVID PERLMAN“We made it possible rightfrom the start, almost 20years ago, for presentersof live music to list whatthey were doing free ofcharge so that audiencescould be confident theywere getting the wholestory, not just the moneystory. Now we are offeringeducators the sameopportunity— to be foundby anyone interested instudying music, frombeginner to professional, casual to committed. So what will it take? Tostart, about ten minutes...”Allan PulkerSee page 51.In My Prism CellIlike to think there is a particular point on thenarrow spiral catwalk inside the large-chimneyedincinerator of hell reserved for art criticswho have somewhere in their twisted souls a fierceand thirsty love for the paintings of Seurat or Manet. At this particular point on the interior wall of hell’schimney, therefore, is a large painting by one orthe other of these two painters. Hell, by definitionfor the aforementioned critic lies in the fact that hecannot step back far enough from the painting toget it in focus, without falling over the railing of thecatwalk into the fiercest fires at the very bottom ofthe chimney, which are reserved for ex-mayors andpeople who use “walking ovations” to be the firstout of the opera or symphony hall.I particularly enjoy thinking about other people’shells when I am sitting nailed to a computer screen, contemplating in little prismatic flashes all the pleasuresof the musical month ahead that will, alas, for the most part be denied to me, because after aday to catch my breath I will be plunged into thenext publishing cycle, sitting on my bum behind acomputer screen. But oh how pretty the little flashes are.For example, there’s noticing that Shauna Rolston(who found her way onto the cover of the magazinethis month because of her involvement in PeggyBaker Dance Projects he:she) will demonstrateher passion and versatility at least twice in othercontexts this month: Monday March 10 at U ofT with the Cecilia Quartet and soprano StacieDunlop, and March 7 as part of the TSO’s tenthannual New Creations Festival. Has it reallybeen ten years since Peter Oundjian arrived onthe scene? And there’s noting (with double pleasure) notonly that the Toronto New Music Alliance is backat the Toronto Reference Library March 3, 10 and17 with New Music 101 but also that John Teraudswill be hosting the series. (See the very end ofour ETCETERA FILE, which starts on page 47,for information on the series.) Terauds’ involvementis a treat. He has the ability to ask the kindsof straightforward questions an expert in the fieldwouldn’t condescend to.Speaking of Terauds, I noticed that he showsup in an entirely unexpected capacity this issue,as librettist for a short opera called Etiquette(composer, Toy Piano Collective’s Monica Pearce)which will be one of three presented April 5 atHeliconian Hall by Essential Opera.I could go on. But the reality is I won’t make itout to more than a fraction of the world of musicalfulfillment that’s out there for the taking. But youwill, won’t you? So write me when you do.publisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote VOLUME 19 NO 6 | MARCH 1 – APRIL 7, 2014Centre for Social Innovation720 Bathurst St., Suite 503, Toronto ON M5S 2R4PHONE 416-323-2232 | FAX 416-603-4791Publisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comChairman of the Board | Allan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comEDITORIALManaging Editor | Paul Enniseditorial@thewholenote.comRecordings Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comSocial Media Editor | Sara Constanteditorial@thewholenote.comListings Editor | David Perlman (acting)listings@thewholenote.comClub Listings Editor | Ori Daganjazz@thewholenote.comSALES, MARKETING & MEMBERSHIPConcerts & Events/Membership | Karen Agesmembers@thewholenote.comRetail Sales/Marketing | Garry Pagemarketing@thewholenote.comDirectories | Adam Weinmanneducation@thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comClassified Ads | classad@thewholenote.comWebsite/Systems | Bryson Winchestersystems@thewholenote.comCirculation/Subscriptions | Chris Malcolmcirculation@thewholenote.comSUBSCRIPTIONS per year + HST (9 issues)THANKS TO THIS MONTH’S CONTRIBUTORSBeat ColumnistsHans de Groot, Jack MacQuarrie, Benjamin Stein,Paul Ennis, David Olds, Dave Podgorski,Ori Dagan, Wendalyn Bartley, Jim Galloway,mJ buell, Christopher Hoile, Andrew Timar, AllanPulkerFeaturesPaula CitronCD ReviewersAlex Baran, Stuart Broomer, Hans de Groot,Daniel Foley, Jim Galloway, Wallace Halladay, TiinaKiik, Roger Knox, Lesley Mitchell-Clarke, ChristinaPetrowska Quilico, Allan Pulker, Cathy Riches,Terry Robbins, Bruce Surtees, Ken WaxmanProofreadingJohn Sharpe, Paul Ennis, Sara Constant, KarenAgesListingsDavid Perlman, Ori Dagan,Adam Weinmann, Tilly Kooyman,JennieLea McLeish, Ruth AtwoodFelix Deak, Bryson WinchesterCirculation TeamAbram Bergen, Asa Perlman, Beth Bartley,Bob Jerome, Dagmar Sullivan, Dave Taylor,Gero Hajek, Jack Buell, Jack Suttaby, Jeff Hogben,Joan Andrews, John Dodington, Lorna Nevison,Micah Herzog, Niamh Malcolm, Patrick Slimmon,Paul Ennis, Randy Weir, Rebecca Carpenter,Robert Faulkner, Sharon Clark, The Giang Nguyen,Tom Sepp, Vicki Stainton, Wende BartleyLayout & DesignBryson Winchester & Uno RamatTHE ONTARIO ARTS COUNCIL IS ANAGENCY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIOUpcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Saturday March 8Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Saturday March 15Classifieds Deadline6pm Saturday March 22Advertising Materials Due6pm Tuesday March 18Publication DateFriday March 28Volume 19 No 7 coversApril 1, 2014 to May 7, 2014WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibility orliability for claims made for any product or servicereported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementMarch 2014: 30,000 printed & distributedCanadian Publication Product Sales Agreement1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHOLENOTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.Centre for Social Innovation503–720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4COPYRIGHT © 2014 WHOLENOTE MEDIA INCthewholenote.com6 | March 1 – April 7, 2014 thewholenote.com
