VINCENT LIONSOn The Road

VINCENT LIONSOn The Road continued from page 11Pouya HamidiComposer and pianist, Ladom Ensemble“I’m looking forward to various music festivals in the summer, inparticular the Montreal Jazz Festival. The best part of this festival isthe ability to attend many free shows and discover artists that youmay have never come across. I am also looking forward to the writingand arranging of works for Ladom Ensemble this summer...It is anopportunity to infuse different ethnic flavours (Persian, Serbian, etc.)and inspirations into [the group’s] unique makeup. We are planninga number of shows in September for Ladom Ensemble, includingToronto and Montreal dates. We have some other plans in theworks but they are now top secret. We can’t reveal everything rightnow, can we?”Alex Pangman, Jazz vocalist“This summer I am quite lookingforward to hearing sets by Red HotRamble at the Toronto Jazz Festival. It’sa Toronto band playing New Orleansmusic and originals co-led by RobertaHunt (on piano and vocals) and GlennAnderson (drums) and crew. MusicallyI am totally excited to be heading outwest with my band, Alex Pangman& Her Alleycats. Along with theToronto Jazz Festival, we’ll be hittingOttawa, Medicine Hat, Edmonton andVictoria. Nothing thrills me quite as much as jazz fest time of year...Going on the road with the Alleycats is always a lot of fun: like beingon a working trip with your friends. It’s a lot of advance work for theleader, so I’ve been prepping a lot to put tour plans in order!”Jamie Thompson, Flutist“My Urban Flute adventures continue apace, with some late nightexcursions checking out the acoustics of some of Toronto’s historicdowntown buildings and abandoned ballrooms! Last weekendI received an invitation to record in a private jet hangar up nearPearson, so lots of stories to tell on my site! For the first week of June,it’s a real pleasure to be part of the returning faculty for the TDSB’sMusic by the Lake retreat up near Orillia. This is always rewarding asteacher and performer, including the opportunity to enjoy performancesby students and faculty alike...Oh, and for real adventuresin new listening experiences, you’ll find me at Audiopollinationevents at Array Space, as well as NAISA installations at the ArtscapeWychwood Barns.”Music at Port MilfordSummer Chamber Music FesvalLinden String QuartetTokai String QuartetSt. Mary Magdalene335 Main Street, PictonStudent MatineesJULAUGUST 3 + 10Details at mpmcamp.orgDiscoverPrince EdwardCountySUMMER IN ONTARIOWorld-Class MusicBeachBike ToursArstVineyardsTickets sold at the door andat www.mpmcamp.orgJane BunnettSaxophonist, flutist, bandleader and composer“Currently practising the newly recorded music on my new CD,Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, that we will be performing all overNorth America this summer. I am looking forward to experiencingCanada with Maqueque (my new group), which is made up of an allstarcast of young women in their early 20s from Havana, Cuba. Thisis our first tour, in support of our first CD...so I am hoping to cover asmuch ground as possible...next will be a more extensive tour of the USwest coast. Then on to Europe.”Jordana Talsky, Jazz vocalist“I’m choosing tunes for some upcominggigs: Fitzi’s Crabshack in Barrie, Gate 403with the Brown-Talsky 5, and some privateevents in Toronto. I’m also trying to improvemy jazz theory, so I’ve just come from alesson with pianist Mark Kieswetter, who isbravely accepting the challenge of teachingme – or shall I say is attempting to infiltratemy stubborn brain and knock some jazzsense into it!...Looking forward to summerpatio gigs in the city (Morgan’s on the Danforth, Relish), the JazzOn The Mountain At Blue festival, the All-Canadian Jazz Festival inPort Hope, the Stratford Culinary Arts Festival…I feel very lucky to bemaking music at these excellent events. And thank the gods summeris finally upon us!”Eve Egoyan, Pianist“I am presently working on Surface Tension, for disklavier and realtimeimages. The music is a structured improvisation created by me inresponse to the visual worlds created by media artist David Rokeby...Ihave two creative residencies this summer, at the Banff Centre’sLeighton Artist Colony for two weeks and one week at Artspring. These are away times, focused away from my work as an interpreter, for developing further my own compositional language. They areextensions of the Chalmers Awards Fellowship I received last year. Iwill also be preparing to record a solo piano album of music by LindaCatlin Smith in the fall of 2014.”Kevin Mallon, Conductor“I am hoping to get to Airline Icarus by Brian Current and TapestryOpera’s production of Shelter. Also I am hoping to catch performancesat the three festivals where I am working over the summer, particularly the “other” operas at Halifax Summer Opera Festival.(I will be conducting Giulio Cesare, but I am looking forward toattending Dvořák’s Rusalka and Sondheim’s Into the Woods.) I have alot of repertoire to prepare: Pictures at an Exhibition with OrchestraToronto, Brahms’ Symphony No.2 with Orchestra London...Aradiahas just been featured as part of a Deutsche Grammophon 56-CDanthology of 100 Great Symphonies, so I am also excited to get thatand to listen to these CDs!”Gabrielle McLaughlin, Soprano“As usual, I am really anticipating the Pride performancesthroughout the month of June. This year, however, Toronto hostsWorldPride and there are some pretty spectacular Drag Queensperforming. I will be found at any show that has been vaguelyinfluenced by RuPaul...The church choir that I direct at CalvinPresbyterian/Deer Park United Churches is also doing some very goodwork. I look forward to continuing in the great choral tradition andmaking music with this enthusiastic and capable bunch! Like all mysummers, this one will be spent planning the next I FURIOSI season. We have dates and a venue – now it’s time to nail down the guests, the themes and all the surprises. Administrative work is more fun inthe sun.”More from these correspondents, plus others, can be found atthewholenote.com/ontheroad, where the online version will live andgrow.
