For three decades it has fertilized the ground for contemporary musical activities in Toronto, building an appreciative audience for new music in the city through the presentation of some 200 concerts by Canadian and international composers, including lectures, films, mixed media presentations, forums, reading weekends and music theatre events. Six performances will be offered in new music concerts' 1996-97 subscription series, commencing with a recital of music by John Beckwith, Alice Ho and Anton Webern on October 11th. The extraordinary double bass virtuoso Steffano Scoddinibio returns by popular demand of December 8th with a concert featuring the music of Luigi Nono. On January 22nd, 1997 NMC hosts an aii-Canadian programme by the Vancouver New Music Society. The legacy of the late Japanese composer Toro Takemitsu will be honoured with a retrospective on February 20th. The North American premiere of Jens- : : i •15• : :: Peter Ostendorf's unique "architectural music-theatre" Die Welthaumeister will be presented as part of a exhibition at the Design Exchange on March 16th. The final concert of the season, Canadian Encounters, featuring the music of John Oswald, Omar Daniel, Henry Kucharzyk, Alexina Louie and Melissa Hui, takes place June 1st. As well as its self-produced Toronto ·Concert Series, the 1996 I 97 season finds the ensemble appearing at the Ford Centre and Roy Thomson Hall with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and at the National Arts Centre with the NAC Orchestra.
