It also gives me achance to pester homebodies to drag themselves outside to join me forsome live music. Here is a fraction (and I do mean a small fraction) ofthe concerts I will be encouraging people to attend this month:Jazz jams: The Rex’s monthly jazz jam used to be hosted by adifferent artist each month, but recently, saxophonist Chris Gale hasbecome the primary host. The most important part, in my view, ofhosting a jam is the ability to create the right environment. Havingbeen a few times over the last couple of months, it seems to me thatChris Gale has found precisely the right formula. The jam has becomea place where seasoned professionals gather, but manage not to scarethe less experienced out of joining in the fun. Gale pays close attentionto who has played how many tunes and gives all players a fair shake.Got aTuesday night conflict? No problem. There is no shortageof jams in Toronto. Some examples include the Monday night jamat Annette Studio hosted by drummer Jared Goldman (handeddown to him this year from saxophonist Nick Morgan), the DjangoGypsy Jazz Jam at Grossman’s Tavern, and – singers, take note! – LisaParticelli’sWednesday night singer-focused jam, “Girls’ Night Out”(where guys are welcome, too).Larnell Lewis, the Toronto-based drummer who frequently recordsand tours with Snarky Puppy, is respected not only for his powerfulgrooves and technical mastery of the instrument, but also for hisartistry and ability to create solos that capture the interest of a listener,much in the way agood story would.For those of us whohave heard himplay, it should be nosurprise that thismonth, Lewis willbe playing his firstsolo drum concert –a rare thing – at 80Gladstone. The venueis charming, and I’mcertain the musicwill be, too.Hewan: Twentythree-year-oldpianist PatrickHewan, who willbe playing all theSunday brunches atThe Jazz Bistro forthe whole month ofMarch, is an adventureto watch, nevermind listen to. AsChris Galehe plays, you cansee on his face, andin every gesture, the excitement he gets out of exploring the piano.And if you’ve seen him perform more than once, you’ll know: he’snot the type of player to repeat himself much.
