DISCOVERIES A summer’s worth of recordings reviewed Tomasz Kot and Joanna Kulig in Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War COURTESY MONGREL MEDIA FEATURES This photo of Tomasz Kot and Joanna Kulig from Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War captures the chemistry and intimacy that characterizes the star-crossed lovers they portray. I saw the film on Day 4 of the Cannes Film Festival and was just as awash in its sights and sounds after I saw it again on Day 12. Knocked out by the electricity of the performers and the black and white cinematography, swept along by the soundtrack and just as taken by the musical and political backdrop. Pawlikowski’s screenplay was inspired by his parents’ turbulent 40-year relationship. Cold War is dedicated to them. — Paul Ennis ACD2 2748 A collection of pieces for solo violin by great Canadian composers.
