It was to be the only time our paths would cross. I remember most how gracious he was, and how much more interested he was in what we were trying to do with WholeNote (or Pulse as it was then) than in worrying how my story on him would turn out. One comment he made has stuck with me. I was, I think, launching into an apologia for the fact that it was "only on newsprint" and h~ stopped me cmd. "This," he said, touching a . hand to'the newsprint, "this is the best thing about it, that it's on newsprint. Do you know why? Because as long as it's on newsprint, that way we'll know we're getting the whole story, not just the money story." It's an odd feeling going into May, the grand climax of the choral season, to think that he will not be conducting any of the morethan-fifty choral concerts in our listings this month. ·I wonder how close to "the whole story" fifty choral concerts a month is? Would the whole story have been anywhere near fifty were it not for the life of Elmer Iseler? MONTHLY CLASSICAL CONTEMPORARY CONCERT LISTING SOURCE
