Some groups are really into the contemporary part of it, there's a btmch of groups that fit into that category. Titen there's a btmch of groups that are really very authentic, and very into authenticity, and will argue every little dot to death. Tile danger with those groups is that it can sowtd a bit dry sometimes in a performance, like a musewn piece, which is also not the point. WholeNote: And Tafelmusik? Lamon: Tafelmusik definitely falls smack in the middle. I think it is very important that it feels alive, and that the musicians feel if they want to do something new and different they have the space to.do so, that it's OK and audiences want to hear it, and it's not against the spirit of the music. We just this weekend perfonried a program of Beethoven and Mozart. We did Beethoven's First Symphony, mtd people kept saying, "I had no idea that was such an exciting ; piece!" Well, it's not because we play it fast, or something like that. It's also not because we sit on the edge of our chairs. I think it's because when a modem orchestra plays Beethoven on their modem instruments, they're using just a small amount of their instruments' capacities. Titey're not playing very loud, because - it's very hard to describe- it feels like something delicate and precious, that they have to be careful not to over play. You mustn't play this as if it was Wagner, you mustn't use· too much vibrato, you mustn't play too legato .. . When.it was written, however, he was very fmstrated with the instmments. Lamon: No, but if you are used to doing baroque niusic and then you start doing classical music you see classical as imtovative and new and different and n'lote modem and exciting. Come to Mozart from Strauss tone poems and it will seem old and, again, a little bit precious. But when you're playing on the original instruments this is modem music!
