The choir was founded in 1967 as a Centennial project, and over the years, has grown to become one of North York's most valuable cultural organizations. We have been distinguished in having Mayor Mel Lastman as our honorary patron. The North York Singers feel a deep commitment to the local community, and regularly perform at retirement homes, rehabilitation hospitals, and similar institutions. Our present conductor, Gary Heard, will be celebrating his 1Oth year with the choir this season. The growth and professionalism of the group may be attributed to his skill and expertise as the director. This year a flute and guitar program is being developed as well. Highly qualified teachers help students and their families to immerse themselves ill>the music. The late Dr. Shinichi Suzuki's "mother-tongue" method of learning, ·by which chiidren learn to speak through constant listening and loving encouragement, is used in learning the language of music. Obser:vation of their children's lessons is an integral part of the method, as is frequent opportunities to perform for supportive audiences of peers and parents. The school also offers a Parent-Toddler program of fingerplays, songs, games and simple rhythm instruments. Snack time gives everyone a chance to make friends. The company operates offices in Toronto and Vienna, Austria and represents opera singers, as well as conductors, stage directors, and instrumentalists. The majority of the singers affiliated with the Toronto agency are Canadians, with a sprinkling of Americans, while the Vienna office concentrates mostly on artists that are based in Europe. A number of the Canadian artists have now moved to Europe and have since been placed with different houses on either a Festvertrag or guest engagement basis while some of the company's European singers have been able to secure engagements with various North American opera houses, symphonies and choirs. The agency prides itself in giving promising but untried young artists an /opportunity to have career guidance and development, while at the same time maintaining a core of seasoned professionals. The group will perform, in winter and spring concerts, a varied repertoire of choral music that crosses traditional cultural and linguistic boundaries. The group borrows from its multicultural base to perform works in Finnish, Yiddish, Spanish, Japanese, Romanian, German, Welsh, Latin and of course, English. In the past, the ensemble's repertoire has ranged from Renaissance madrigals to African hymns to Georgian lullabies. Denise Williams has performed in opera and concert around Toronto and examines for the Royal Conservatory. Laura Pudwell, member of the Toronto Consort and frequent performer for Opera Atelier, coached Early Music this summer at pro VOCE. Peter Neff, who has performed and taught extensively in Germany, will offer classes in Schumann Lieder, and a study of settings of Goethe's Mignon and Harfner texts. French Diction teacher Elisabeth Pomes is an awardwinning soprano, and a native of France with a degree in literature. From classical and world music to jazz, pop, comedy and spoken word, audiences will enjoy memorable performances for every taste and age group.

Highlights of the 1999/2000 season include the worldrenowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, conducted by Riccardo Chailly; soprano Kiri Te Kanawa; and pianist Evgeny Kissin, hailed as a "living legend", performs an all- Russian program. Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham makes her Canadian recital debut; and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade performs a broad spectrum of vocal music. Other star performers include bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, violinist Midori and, performing with his quartet and chamber orchestra, jazz legend Oscar Peterson. Choirs include the Vienna Boys Choir, the Caernarfon Male Voice Choir of Wales and the Boys Choir of Harlem. program featuring the premiere performance of a new work by Barbara Croall, commissioned by the SPO.
