· One of the great mysteries of · life in Toronto is that the city that can sustain 70 to 80 concerts a week from late September to early · June can barely muster that many in all of July and August. . While it is true that some people flee "the long hot summer" / in the city, Toronto is far from being a ghost town at that time. There are stirrings that give cause for "cautious optimism" about the future here, but meanwhile an amazing summer concert season is flourishing in varjous other parts of Southern Ontario. And, as ever, Toronto musicians are a vital part of this out-of-town chase-the-music summer scene. Pianist Anton Kuerti, for example, will be performing at the Brott Summer Music Festival in Hamilton on July 12 anci 13, at the Huntsville Festival on July 15 and the Collingwood Festival on July 16. The Gryphon Trio has four performances. at the Ottawa COVER STORY · Hot summer, cool music The Elmer Iseler Singers Chamber Music Festival, the Modern Quartet has two performances at the Elora Festival. The Elmer lseler Singers start July in Toronto, with the TSO at Centre Island, July 1, and return to the city.July 30, to St. James' Cathedral, as part of the new H.O.T. (Historic Old Toronto) Music Festival. But they will also be at the Festival of the Sound on August 4 and at the Brott Summer Festival on August 19, where they will join the Desert Chorale of Nevada, the Vox Nouveau Singers and . the National Academy Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bruckner's TeDeum and Glick's The Hour has Come, conducted by Festival artistic;: director, Boris Brott.
