y Larry Beckwith Its wall-to-wall choral music, this month, as most of Toronto s choirs ' seasons are in full swing. VocaiPoint is a relatively new choir directed by Ian Gnmdy. They specialize in English choral music throughout the ages and they give a concert of works by Harris, '?lilian, Stanford and Vaughan Williams on Nov 6. The Choir of Christ Church Deer Park give a special Remembrance Day programme at noon Nov 11. Stanford, Howells and Bruckner are on the bill. The Bell' Arte Singers' conductor Lee Willingham presents his choir in an intriguing programme featuring music by Hildegard, Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Howells and others. Entitled Magnificat, the concert takes place on November 13. The following evening sees a concert of music inspired by Shakespeare and presented by the Rosedale United Church Choir, directed by Wayne Strongman. Special guest is veteran Canadian actor William Hutt, who, incidentally, is heading into his fmal season at Stratford with what promises to be a performance for the ages as Prospero in The Tempest . Conductor Lydia Adams shares the podium with Bramwell Tovey November 16 for a Massey Hall New Music Festival concert with the Amadeus Choir and the Hannaford Street Silver Band. Tovey is multi-talented - witness the way he juggled the varying interests and abilities of Bryn Terfel, Patricia O'Callaghan and an ad hoc "Roy Thomson H;all Orchestra" in a program ranging from Wagner. to Sound of Music last month. Here he will conduct the world premiere of his Requiem Mass for the Dead. (An attempt to take a page out of Tovey's Wmnipeg New Music Festival, by offering jazz in the informal setting of the Centuries Lounge following concerts has alas not come to fruition.) The Massey Hall Festival continues chorally two nights later, with the Elmer Iseler Singers and, all other things being equal, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, in a fascinating programme of music by Harry Somers, Claude Vivier, Jeff Ryan and Gary Kulesha. Should the TSO still be strikesilenced, we can only hope that a "Massey Hall Orchestra" will miraculously step into the breach. All The King's Voices wins this year's annual Christmas Messiah derby, getting out of the gate hard on the heels of the Santa Claus Parade, November 21 with a performance of the deservedly oft-performed Handel oratorio. On the same afternoon Jurgen Petrenko's Toronto Classical Singers tuck into Handel's Alexander's Feast with a fme roster of soloists including the ~rsatile Patricia O'Callaghan. November 27 offers many choices to choral music fans. The Oriana Singers give a concert of treble Christmas music. The Calvin Church Choir and the Royal Conservatory Children's Choir team up for An Advent Wreath and the Metropolitan United Church Choir join forces with the Niagara Brass Ensemble for Christmas favourites. Early December brings Leslie Bell, please contact the Chanticleer's annual trip to the Choirs Ontario office at 923-1144. Let's all hope the TSO musicians strike will be settled before the Festival so that this remarkable programme can be realized. (/'he Massey Festival concluding concert, November 19, New Music Concerts tribute to their founding artistic director Robert Aitken, is discussed in our cover story on page 12.) Lest new music afficionados think 'Breaking the Sound Barrier' is the only happening in November, rest assured there are some other exciting concerts. Two programmes highlighting contemporary piano virtuosi act as frames for this wonderful month. The Music Gallery opens its 1999/2000 season piano series with the Toronto debut of Australian pianist Simon Docking (November 5). This talented artist has always had a particular interest in contemporary music, and for several years was resident pianist of, the Australian new music ensemble Coruscations. Docking has been to this country before (but never to Toronto) with an all Canadian program which toured to Montreal and Ottawa in 1997. His repertoire includes music by such figures as Louis Andriessen, Pierre Boulez, Brian Cherney, Brian Ferneyhough and Torn Takemitsu. And on November 22 at Walter Hall, U ofT pianist Stephen Clarke will gives a marathon concert, featuring only one piece - Morton Feldman's 'For Phillip Guston' duration four and a half hours. The other instruments involved are flute, and percussion. This epic work is Feldman's loving memorial tribute to his friend, the abstract expressionist Philip Guston. David G.H.
